Interleukin 17 inhibitors
Biologic therapy also includes interleukin 17 (IL-17) inhibitors. This type of medication works by blocking the activity of IL-17, another cytokine involved in inflammation, as well as other processes associated with psoriatic arthritis. By blocking the action of this cytokine, the IL-17 inhibitor can reduce inflammation and pain.
Additionally, the inhibition of IL-17 by the IL-17 inhibitors also reduces the production of proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-alpha, which can further reduce inflammation. Moreover, these drugs also block the production of various chemokines, which are involved in leukocyte recruitment to the affected area and can contribute to the inflammatory response.
