Understanding Prostate Cancer: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Biopsy

Biopsy means that a small part of a tissue or organ is sampled using special tools to be examined later under the microscope and using special tools. In prostate cancer, this is done using a special needle inserted through the rectum under anesthesia and using ultrasonography as a guide.

This sample helps confirm the diagnosis, confirming which type of prostate cancer you have, and it can sometimes be used to predict whether the cancer would respond to hormonal therapy. Biopsy is a safe procedure and side effects are rare.
