Patients with kidney stones may also experience nausea and vomiting during intense pain episodes. This is also triggered by acute inflammation in the urinary tract, which activates cytokines that travel through the nervous system and activate the gag reflex.
Patients often experience that more intense pain triggers more frequent nausea episodes, which can easily turn into an episode of vomiting. These patients need adequate fluid support to prevent dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.
