FODMAP Diet | What You Need To Know!

Conditions in Which it is Not Recommended

from leftsidepains

  • Pregnant and lactating women as this can affect the growth and nourishment of both fetus and mother.
  • Children need nutrients essential for proper development according to their age and height. So it is never recommended for children unless and otherwise, they have a severe allergy to certain food components.
  • Already malnourished individuals are never suggested for a restricted diet or elimination diet. Being in a negative nitrogen balance, they need to consume extra calories and a nutrient-dense diet rather than a low-FODMAP diet.
  • Those suffering from eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Eating disorders put the patient into muscle wasting which can ultimately move to sarcopenia and cachexia. The first priority for these patients is to provide any kind of food they accept easily. So, no food is restricted until the patient recovers to a normal stable psychological and nutritional state.
  • Patients who are already on other dietary restrictions such as vegans. Some people have certain religious and cultural beliefs that restrict them from eating certain food groups. This may have already affected their nutritional status if they are not choosing a proper healthy substitute for that nutrient. So, it is not recommended to follow such a diet especially if you are not feeling any discomfort from FODMAPs.
